SOMOS is a Mexican food company founded by three friends who grew up in Mexico. They create authentic, ready-to-eat Mexican dishes using traditional recipes and ingredients. Their goal is to bring genuine Mexican home cooking to the U.S. market, filling a gap they noticed in the availability of high-quality Mexican food for home preparation.

MY ROLE

(UI DESIGNER)

As a collaborating designer in a team of five, I contributed to creating a cohesive visual experience by following brand guidelines and collaborating closely with fellow designers. I participated in regular team meetings to align on visual storytelling, ensuring consistency across the project. In addition to design work, I worked with both the design team and SOMOS engineers to support seamless execution and delivery.

CHALLENGE

(THE PROBLEM)

SOMOS faced a unique challenge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. They wanted to capitalize on the growing trend of AI integration while staying true to their brand essence. Their innovative idea was to create an AI feature embodying the voice of their Mexican mother, affectionately called "Abuela."

This AI "Abuela" would serve as an interactive tool for users to ask questions about Mexican cuisine, cooking techniques, and cultural traditions. The concept aimed to blend modern technology with the warmth and wisdom traditionally associated with a family matriarch, reinforcing SOMOS' commitment to authentic, home-style Mexican food.

During the chatbot creation, we experimented with various design patterns, constantly referencing and reinterpreting the brand guidelines. Through careful refinement and collaborative feedback, we ultimately arrived at a design that perfectly balanced functionality, creating a unique and engaging user interface for the AI feature.

We designed an intuitive FAQ section for common queries, initially using green. After user feedback and brand reassessment, we pivoted to a pink color scheme, which better resonated with SOMOS' identity and enhanced overall user experience.
